The 29-year-old Khan (31-3), a former Olympic silver medallist and light-welterweight world champion, will be Alvarez’s first opponent since he beat Miguel Cotto on a unanimous points decision in Vegas in November 2015 to claim the then-vacant WBC title.

“This fight is going to be an exciting fight. It’s something I’ve always dreamed of, and Canelo’s an amazing fighter, obviously, who has fought some big names in boxing,” Khan told an excited crowd at the media event.

Alvarez, (46-1-1, 32 KOs), has only one defeat on an otherwise unblemished record, a majority decision loss in a title fight against American Floyd Mayweather in 2013.

“Canelo’s a tough guy, you know – comes fighting forward, he’s strong, he has a huge Mexican fan base. I mean this fight is huge all around the world,” added Khan as he taunted the pro-Alvarez crowd. “I tell you one thing now: Cinco de Mayo is 7 May, that’s when the fight’s going to be, but you’re going to see more British flags in Vegas than the Mexican flags. This is what makes boxing great.”

For his part, Alvarez demonstrated why he had such a strong fan base. “You guys motivate me to keep winning. Because of you, every day I wake up and want to be triumphant – not only for me but for you guys. I’m going to prepare like always, 100%,” he told his fans in Spanish.

The fight will air on HBO, which will also show a behind the scene series of the fighters training in the lead up to the fight in April.
